Project Overview

Bringing sustainable energy solutions to the heart of the American University of Beirut (AUB), MetaSol executed a monumental project encompassing four key buildings on the campus. This initiative marked a significant step towards a greener and more energy-efficient educational environment.

  • Client
    American University of Beirut (AUB)
  • Category
    Energy, Solar, Education
  • Date
    November 2022 – October 2023
  • Project Capacity
    675.8 kWp

Design:

Using our custom-made anodized aluminum profiles for extended lifetime, durability, and advanced weather resistance. To maximize the limited roof area of the buildings, we opted for east-west PV panel mounting for optimized solar production.

Supply:

Procurement of top-tier solar components ensured the reliability and longevity of the systems. High-efficiency solar panels and advanced lithium storage units were sourced to meet the project’s specific requirements.

Installation:

The expert installation team from MetaSol ensured the seamless integration of solar systems onto the rooftops of the designated buildings. Precision and attention to detail were paramount in achieving optimal energy harnessing.

Operation and Commissioning:

Beyond installation, our role extended to the operational phase. Thorough testing and commissioning procedures were carried out to guarantee the efficiency and reliability of the On-Grid and Hybrid Solar PV Systems.

Project showcase: AUB – Mayfair Dorms

Challenge: High Electricity Costs from Diesel Generators

  • The AUB dorms at Mayfair relied on 500 kVA diesel generators for power.
  • Disconnected from the AUB power plant and lacking a reliable grid, the dorms faced high costs due to:
    • Limited Operation: Primarily operating during Fall and Spring semesters, with minimal staff in the summer.
    • Inefficient Diesel Usage: Running the generators below the 30% minimum capacity resulted in wasted fuel.
    • High Diesel Prices: Diesel costs were significant in Lebanon.

Solution: Solar Power and Battery Storage

  • We proposed a solar PV system and lithium ion storage solution:
    • Solar Panels: 56 kWp solar panels were installed on the roof, maximizing available space.
    • Lithium Battery Storage: A 90 kWh lithium storage system supplemented the solar power.

 Success: Significant Cost Reduction

  • The new system allows for:
    • Summer Operation: The building now operates solely on solar and battery power during the summer semester, requiring only 2 hours of generator use per day.
    • Reduced Generator Usage: Throughout the year, the solar and battery system significantly reduces reliance on the diesel generators, leading to substantial cost savings.
